Cambridge-born trombonist, composer and arranger, Tom Green, who won the 2013 Dankworth prize for Composition, fronts this strong and assured septet of young musicians.

They recently released their debut album, ‘Skyline’ earlier this year with all original compositions and mighty impressive reviews - his reputation is fast growing as one of the UK’s brilliant young musicians.

"A kaleidoscope of harmony that is not only phenomenally skilful, but absorbing and endlessly entertaining, too"

Dave Gelly, Observer, ☆☆☆☆

"A band with big sound, and big prospects"
John Fordham, the Guardian, Feb 2015

"Remarkable… only the very best arrangers can get a sound like that from four horns"
Evan Parker, June 2013

"Mighty impressive... this band is one to look out for"
Ivan Hewett, the Telegraph, Feb 2015

"Contemporary chamber jazz that is both elegant and lively, full of tightly written passages that blossom into free playing with natural ease"
Tony Benjamin, Venue Magazine Bristol, December 2013

Before the Tom Green Septet gig, musician, professional saxophonist, jazz critic, broadcaster and writer Dave Gelly will be discussing the tradition of the 'Little' Big Band Jazz, as typified by Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool sessions, and how this has informed the compositional style of the young up-and-coming composer-arranger Tom Green, who's ensemble will playing immediately afterwards. Talk starts at 6pm.

A former denizen of Cambridge, where he played with such other alumni as Lionel Grigson and Art Themen in the local clubs as a student in the 60's, Dave has gone on to a prolific career as writer and journalist: Dave is a familar figure, writing weekly for both the the Guardian and the Observer, along with biographies of Stan Getz and Lester Young, and his most recent 2014 book of British jazz culture up to 1960, An Unholy Row.
