Before the Tom Green Septet gig, musician, professional saxophonist, jazz critic, broadcaster and writer Dave gelly will be discussing the tradition of the 'Little' Big Band Jazz, as typified by Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool sessions, and how this has informed to the compositional style ofthe young up-and-coming composer-arranger Tom Green, who's ensemble will playing immediately afterwards.
A former denizen of Cambridge, where he played with such other alumni as Lionel Grigson and Art Themen in the local clubs as a student in the 60's, Dave has gone on to a prolific career as writer and journalist: Dave is a familar figure, writing weekly for both the the Guardian and the Observer, along with biographies of Stan Getz and Lester Young, and his most recent 2014 book of British jazz culture up to 1960, An Unholy Row.
