Soweto Kinch is a double MOBO award-winning saxophonist who unites jazz, hip-hop and spoken word.

Award-winning alto-saxophonist and MC, Soweto Kinch, joins forces Cambridge's premier Big Band, The Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra: CUJO. 

 

Kinch unites together his love for jazz, hp-hop and spoken word and has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic – including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and a MOBO for best Jazz Act in 2003. In October 2007, he won his second MOBO Award, at the O2 Arena, London where he was announced as the winner in the Best Jazz Act category. 

 

His skills as a hip hop MC and producer have also garnered him considerable recognition in the urban music world. He also presents BBC Radio Three’s new regular slot ‘Jazz Now’.

CUJO is Cambridge University’s premiere jazz ensemble bringing together the best jazz musicians in the university.  The group is 20-strong and focuses on performing jazz arrangements by leading big bands, standards, swing and funk.

 

They have worked with musicians such as Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Dennis Rollins, Steve Waterman, Gareth Lockrane, Stan Sulzmann and Laurence Cottle and recent tours have involved performances in Budapest, Prague, Istanbul and Bordeaux.
