At this jazz vocal masterclass, Anita Wardell and Robin Phillips will share many of their top tips and tricks learned over years of professional jazz performances. Afternoon tea will also be provided at the masterclass and there is an option of joining both Anita and Robin for lunch before the start of the masterclass.

 

This workshop will look specifically at how jazz singers can become part of an ensemble, enabling them to feel like part of the band, rather than a separate entity. Participants will learn key factors in leading a jazz ensemble and how to participate in the group’s performance alongside the instrumentalists. 

 

As a singer can often be most aware of the ‘room’ during a performance, the workshop will also look at how the singer (or bandleader) can take control to adapt the performance in the moment, to maximise the success of the event. 

 

The workshop will also be of interest to instrumentalists looking to learn the important skills of becoming a successful bandleader. 

Topics will include:

• Putting the band together

• Making arrangements

• Creating the ‘show’

• Starting and finishing songs

• Taking part as a soloist

• Controlling the improvisational element of a song

• Adapting the performance in the moment 

As well as learning from our two facilitators, participants will have the chance to get involved and practice the above techniques, as well as ask their own questions about jazz singing.

Anita received the prestigious BBC Jazz Award for Best of Jazz category in 2006 and a British Jazz award for Best Vocalist in 2013. This, coupled with the release of The Road has propelled Anita into the major artist arena. She has guested on many local and international recordings.

Anita Wardell's singing is dynamic, exciting and breathtaking. She is noted for her mesmerizing and captivating vocal improvisations and vocalese lyrics to instrumental solos. Anita is a musician who uses the voice as her instrument, displaying precision and agility, mixed with heartfelt emotion.
