Charanga del Norte will be performing as an 11-piece band playing Charanga típica styles of Cuban dance music such as Mambo, Chachachá, Danzón and Pachanga as well as Son and Son Montuno dance styles.

The inspiration for the band came from Orquesta Aragón and Israel ‘Cachao’ Lopez and the story of the band can be found on the history page and also in the preface to the book Cuban Flute Style: Interpretation and Improvisation of their website:

Charanga del Norte (Charanga from the North) was set up in 1998 by the bandleader Sue Miller who studied Cuban flute improvisation with the legendary Richard Egües from Orquesta Aragón.

The band consists of flute, violins, viola, cello, bass, piano, singers, timbales, congas and güiro. They have toured the UK and performed at many venues including the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester and at festivals as diverse as Harrogate, Sidmouth, Cheltenham and Trowbridge. In 2008 they released their 10th anniversary album ‘Our Mam in Havana’ which has recently been given a four star review in the September issue of Rock ‘n Reel’ magazine.

The idea for Charanga del Norte evolved from the bandleader Sue Miller’s research and study in Havana with veteran Cuban musicians from Orquesta Aragón and the Buena Vista music scene.

Charanga del Norte is the UK’s only Charanga band and they play ‘Latin music, but not as you may know it – this band are deliciously different and incredibly danceable’ (The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen) – plus ‘you’ll dance to this with two left feet and a bag on your head!’ (Brampton Live festival)

Susana tus inspiraciones son muy buenas – pareces una cubana inspirando!
Susan your solos are great – just like a Cuban improviser!

Inviting supporting acts to perform with legendary Cuban artists involved in the Buena Vista Social Club project is no easy matter, finding an outfit in the UK that can hold its own with a well informed audience makes the task all the more difficult…. Bridgewater Hall has a reputation for authentic, first class music and Charanga make the grade.

Before their performance, Sue Miller will give a talk on her work and influences.

We advise booking in advance to avoid any disappointment should they sell out.

There will be space at the rear of the venue for DANCING!
