Playing original compositions the band draw upon a range of influences from the harmonic worlds of Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor, to the soundscapes of Bill Frisell and Avishai Cohen and the rhythmic play of Carnatic music and bembé.
The project is led my trombonist Vij Prakash and brings together recent graduates from the Guildhall and Royal Academy jazz departments in an unconventional instrumental line-up of trombone, violin, vibraphone and electric bass.

Vij Prakash - Trombone
Vij began playing the trumpet at the age of six soon after went to Chetham’s School of Music. During his time there he was awarded concerto, chamber music prizes and the Most Outstanding Instrumentalist at the National Big Band finals. After deciding to switch the trombone in sixth form, Vij went to St Catharine’s College, Cambridge to study music where he was heavily involved in the Cambridge jazz scene and formed The Brass Funkeys. Since moving to London and graduating from the Guildhall School of Music’s Jazz Masters’ Course, Vijay was offered the Jazz Fellowship post, which he now does alongside a guest artist role at the Barbican Centre’s Creative Learning Team. During his time in London, Vij has had the opportunity to play with many great musicians, including Julian Siegel, Cleo Laine, Alec Dankworth, Mike Westbrook, and The London Jazz Orchestra. Vij will be giving a workshop on Sat Dec 8th 11am - 1:30pm with the Jazz Coop.
Through his own musical projects Vijay has performed at an array of prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including The Vortex Jazz Club, Budapest Jazz Club, Havana Jazz Club, Monteux Jazz Festival and Glastonbury.
John Garner - Violin
A graduate of the Royal College of Music and Guildhall School of Music & Drama, violinist and composer John Garner pursues numerous avenues in his music-making. He appears regularly in the UK and abroad with: live production four-piece Meraqi; East-West fusion trio Avartan; contemporary violin duo Mainly Two; the Guastalla String Quartet; and with his own jazz quartet. He has studied with renowned musicians including Dr. Rimma Sushanskaya, Dr. Jyotsna Srikanth, Byron Wallen, Daniel Rowland and Robbie Robson.
Ralph Wyld - Vibraphone
Ralph Wyld is a London-based vibraphonist, percussionist and composer, whose recent accolades include the Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize 2015, and the Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition 2015. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music jazz course, Ralph is making his name playing original, contemporary music with his own ensemble, Mosaic, and in groups such as the Tim Richards Hextet, John Martin’s ‘Hidden Notes’ and Rick Simpson’s ‘Klammer’. He is set to release his debut album in 2016, on leading European Jazz label Edition Records.
Edwin Ireland - Electric bass
Having learnt the cello from the age of seven, Edwin picked up the bass guitar at 13 and soon began playing regularly in various projects in and around his hometown of Bedford. At 18, he began studying at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance and three years later achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Popular Music Performance on the bass guitar.
After a year spent establishing himself as a performer and teacher, Edwin enrolled onto the Guildhall Jazz Masters course during which he has studied electric and upright bass under the likes of Laurence Cottle and Geoff Gascoyne. He now lives in London and teaches for several music services alongside working as a freelance bassist.
