Come an celebrate the music and life of Tubby Hayes at Hot Numbers Coffee with Mark Baxter's 'A Man In a Hurry' with music from The Simon Spillett Quartet.

Mark will be give an introduction with Q&As after the film before a performance of Tubby Hayes music from the Simon Spillett Quartet. Tubby Hayes was probably THE legendary figure of post-war British Jazz. Hayes died tragically in 1973, but has left a rich legacy of recordings, compositions and arrangements which continue to inspire.

 

Featuring Simon Spillett (tenor sax): David Ferris (piano): Stuart Barker (bass): Mark Hale (drums), the quartet plays music written and arranged by the late, great British jazz legend Tubby Hayes, including pieces from classic albums including Mexican Green, The Jazz Couriers in Concert and Late Spot at Scott's.

Simon Spillett is widely regarded as one of the world's leading authority on Tubby Hayes & has recently had is work published about the life of Tubby Hayes entitled 'The Long Shadow of the Little Giant'. His book details Tubby's life, work & legacy he left on the British Jazz Scene. It's already had glowing reviews and nominated for the Penderyn Music Book Award 2016 and the 2016 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research.

Along with the book, Simon's knowledge has also been an invaluable source to the October 2015 Film/ Documentary on Tubby Hayes 'A Man in a Hurry' .

Described by the late Humphrey Lyttelton as "formidable, "Simon Spillett is a British jazz saxophonist. He has won several awards for his music, including the tenor saxophone category of the British Jazz Awards (2011), Jazz Journal magazine's Critic's Choice CD of the Year (2009) and Rising Star in the BBC Jazz Awards (2007). Other celebrated jazz leaders and bands with whom he has worked have included Sir John Dankworth, Stan Tracey, Peter King and The Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra.

 

He has recorded three albums, Introducing Simon Spillett (Woodville Records, 2007), Sienna Red (Woodville Records, 2008) and Square One (Gearbox Records, 2013), all of which have received highly favourable reviews in both the specialist and national press. His festival, concert and club appearances across the UK have included sold-out gigs at Ronnie Scott's and the Brecon Jazz Festival and he has broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Jazz-Line Up with his own band.

He has also worked as a writer, writing the definitive biography of UK jazz legend Tubby Hayes (The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant, Equinox) and articles for magazines including Jazz Journal and Record Collector. Acting as a consultant for a number of jazz record labels, he has written booklet essays for over seventy albums.
