Andrew Bowie 'What Can Jazz Tell us About Philosophy'
The relationship between philosophy and music is often seen in terms of the ‘philosophy of music’ telling us things about the object ‘music’. This assumes philosophy is a theoretical discipline that mainly seeks to explain knowledge of the world. This is not the only way to see philosophy. If we think instead of philosophy as a practice through which we try to make sense of the world, it can be affected by other practices via which we make sense. Jazz is notable for how it progresses by making sense of aspects of sound that previously did not make sense. As Thelonious Monk put it ‘Wrong is right’. The talk will explore some consequences of this idea.
