Duo workshop ‘Music by Women' with award winning composer and saxophonist Issie Barratt and multi-award-winning trumpet player / composer Laura Jurd. The workshop will involve looking at tunes by women composers: Laura Jurd, Trish Clowes, Nikki Iles, Barbara Dennerlein, Melba Liston, Emily Remler, Annie Whitehead, Carla Bley, Billie Holliday (singers as well as instrumentalists are also welcome to participate).  

 

Issie Barrat is a multi-award winning internationally active composer, arranger, conductor, baritone player, record producer and educator who has performed at many worldwide leading concert halls, jazz clubs and festivals. She was founding head of Jazz at TrinityLaban and is the founding Artistic Director of National Youth Jazz Collective and Fuzzy Moon Records, board director of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and active member of the European Composers and Songwriters Alliance.

Issie was recently ranked #38 in BBC Woman's Hour top 40 most powerful women currently working in the music industry.

Laura Jurd is a multi-award-winning trumpet player / composer and was BBC New Generation Artist for 2015-2017. Highly active throughout the UK and Europe, she leads the 2017 Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur, having performed at North Sea, Montreal and Molde International Jazz festivals to name a few. Recently commissioned by the BBC Proms and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Laura has written for some of the UK's leading ensembles including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Ligeti Quartet and the Northern Sinfonia. A passionate educator, Laura is part of the composition faculty at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and a key member of the National Youth Jazz Collective’s faculty of teaching artists.

Issie’s groundbreaking Interchange Dectet - featuring Laura Jurd and new compositions by female jazz musicians - will be playing at the festival on Tue Nov 20.

​

Laura's 2017 Mercury nominated band Dinosaur are performing at the Zoology Museum as part of the Festival on Wed Nov 21.
