Jazz Philosophy Night

ft James Tartaglia

Monday Nov 13th | 19:30 - 22:00 | £5
(10% booking fee)
The Fellows Drawing Room, Murray Edwards College

Philosophers Andy Bowie (Professor of Philosophy and German, Royal Holloway University of London), and James Tartaglia (Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, Keele University) are active jazz musicians (James studied jazz at Berklee College of Music before studying philosophy). Both are concerned at the way contemporary academic philosophy often loses touch with everyday questions about how to make sense of our lives.

This event will explore how jazz may make us aware of dimensions of meaning which can only be enacted in music, and so take us beyond what we can say about central philosophical concerns. The event will involve discussion of jazz and philosophy, and extensive performance, both of jazz standards and of pieces composed by James, and Martin Hallmark.’

The Andy Bowie Quartet: Andy Bowie sax, Martin Hallmark piano, Joel Humann bass, Bert Schilperoort drums; featuring James Tartaglia sax
